What is Dengue Fever?
50-100 Million People are Infected Every Year! It’s Found in 110 Countries, including the US.
Dengue fever, also known as breakbone fever, is an infectious tropical disease caused by the dengue virus. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle and joint pains, and a characteristic skin rash that is similar to measles. Dengue is transmitted by several species of mosquito within the genus Aedes, principally A. aegypti. The virus is not contagious and cannot be spread directly from person to person. There must be a person-to-mosquito-to-another-person pathway.
Citronella oil is popular as a natural insect repellent. It’s mosquito repellent qualities have been verified by research, including effectiveness in repelling Aedes aegypti (the dengue fever mosquito).
Signs & Symptoms:
After being bitten by a mosquito carrying the virus, the incubation period ranges from 3 to 15 (usually 5 to 8) days before the signs and symptoms of dengue appear, which occurs in stages. Dengue starts with chills, headache, pain upon moving the eyes, and low backache. Painful aching in the legs and joints occurs during the first hours of illness. The temperature rises quickly as high as 104°F (40°C), with relatively low heart rate (bradycardia) and low blood pressure (hypotension). The eyes become reddened. A flushing or pale pink rash comes over the face and then disappears. The glands (lymph nodes) in the neck and groin are often swollen.
Fever and other signs of dengue last for two to four days, followed by a rapid drop in body temperature (defervescence) with profuse sweating. This precedes a period with normal temperature and a sense of well-being that lasts about a day. A second rapid rise in temperature follows. A characteristic rash appears along with the fever and spreads from the extremities to cover the entire body except the face. The palms and soles may be bright red and swollen.
How Can Dengue Fever Be Prevented & How Can Citronella Oil Help?
The prevention of dengue requires control or eradication of the mosquitoes carrying the virus that cause dengue. In nations plagued by dengue fever, people are urged to empty stagnant water from old tires, trash cans, and flower pots. Governmental initiatives to decrease mosquitoes also help to keep the disease in check, but have been poorly effective.
To prevent mosquito bites, wear long pants and long sleeves. For personal protection, use mosquito repellant sprays that contain DEET when visiting places where dengue is endemic. There are no specific risk factors for contracting dengue fever, except living in or traveling to an area where the mosquitoes and virus are endemic. Limiting exposure to mosquitoes by avoiding standing water and staying indoors two hours after sunrise and before sunset will help. The Aedes aegypti mosquito is a daytime biter with peak periods of biting around sunrise and sunset. It may bite at any time of the day and is often hidden inside homes or other dwellings, especially in urban areas. There is currently no vaccination available for dengue fever, however you can help protect yourself by using natural Citronella oil as an insect repellent.
Citronella oil is popular as a natural insect repellent. Its mosquito repellent qualities have been verified by research, including effectiveness in repelling Aedes aegypti (dengue fever mosquito). To be continually effective most citronella repellent formulas need to be reapplied to the skin every 30–60 minutes. Research also indicates that Citronella oil is an effective repellent for body louse and head louse. Citronella may irritate skin and cause dermatitis in certain individuals. It should not be used on the skin of young children (under 3 years old).
The US Environmental Protection Agency states that Citronella oil has little or no toxicity when used as a topical insect repellent, with no reports of adverse effects of concern over a 60 year period. Because some products are applied to human skin, EPA requires proper precautionary labeling to help assure safe use. If used according to label instructions in the US, citronella is not expected to pose health risks to people, including children and other sensitive populations. The US Food & Drug Administration considers citronella oil as generally recognized as safe (GRAS).

About Aroma Naturals:
After 20 years of pioneering the world of eco-candles, we are thrilled to announce that we are under new ownership - but not new to the world of natural products.
Our new team is a blend of ground-breaking product development innovators from the natural and organic health & beauty industry, melted together with the best talent from Aroma Naturals.
From the very beginning we gathered the purest essential oils from around the world and the most natural waxes. Then we chose highly knowledgeable aromatherapists and sought out the most creative, artisan candle makers. In order to deliver the quality that is paramount to Aroma Naturals mission, we decided that our candles needed to be hand-crafted in small batches for freshness and integrity. 20 years later, we still make them that way!
As do so many good things, Aroma Naturals began in a kitchen. At the time, all they wanted to do was create an aromatherapeutic candle that was truly and completely natural-something.
So they searched the globe for pure plant aromas and essential oils that were harvested at their peak to ensure freshness. They sourced environmentally kind lead-free wicks, and all-natural vegetable and soy waxes that burn clean and true.
A lot of things have changed since they created their first Aroma Naturals candle in their kitchen, but a lot of things have remained the same. Their mission now is the same as it was then: to enhance well-being and encourage a healthy lifestyle through the use of natural plant and flower aromas.
And even though we're quite a bit larger than they were back then, they still carefully source all of their pure essential oils, and custom blend them by hand in small batches in order to assure their authenticity, integrity and freshness. While most of their competitors are still adding synthetic fragrances to their candles and claiming to be natural, Aroma Naturals candles use 100% pure plant aromas and natural vegetable waxes that are as good for the environment as they are for you.
As committed as they are to growing and innovating, there's no telling where we'll be in the future, but one thing is certain: we'll still be making beautiful candles from 100% plant-derived ingredients using time-honored techniques and eco-friendly packaging. For us, change is always in the air, but they promise it will always be change for the better.
At Aroma Naturals, you'll often hear us say that it's not easy being green but it's certainly worth the effort. They're 100% committed to making sure each and every one of their candles is good for both you and the environment. It's a commitment that takes quite a bit of time, thoughtfulness and research on their part, but they think it's worth it. And as they continually strive to make the finest all-natural candles on earth, they always look to their guiding principles to light the way.
