Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is an androgen or male hormone. DHT is the primary contributing factor in male pattern baldness. A man’s testosterone is transformed into what’s commonly referred to as DHT. As time progresses DHT causes hair follicles to disintegrate. Eventually, most of a man’s hair follicles will die if left untreated.

Causes of Hair Loss in Men
Nothing can be more stressful to a male individual than noticing gradual hair loss, it was once thought to be linked to some mid-life crises, however the fact is younger men suffer from the problem as well. The reasons and causes are numerous, (Androgenetic Alopecia, (DHT) Dihyrotestossterone, hormones, thyroid conditions, medications etc.) and the effects can lead to loss of self-esteem and confidence. It is best to know as much as you can about hair loss if you are experiencing any form of the mentioned conditions, so that you can become prepared and able to explore and render a solution.

How DHT (dihyrotestosterone) affects the cycle
While most men start to see hair thinning in their early 30s or 40s, unfortunately some men experience hair loss/baldness at the onset of adulthood. MPB is caused by the effects of hormones, DHT on genetically susceptible scalp and hair follicles.

DHT is an enzyme that occurs naturally in the body known as 5-alpha reductase. This enzyme converts the hormone testosterone into another hormone known as Dihydrotestosterone. DHT causes male hair loss by shortening the growth, or Anagen phase of the cycle, causing miniaturization (decreased size) of the follicles, and producing progressively shorter, finer hairs. Eventually these follicles totally disappear. The sensitivity is mainly present in hair follicles that reside in the front, top, and crown of the scalp, rather than the back and sides producing a characteristic and identifiable pattern.

Androgentic Alopecia
By far the most common cause of hair loss in men is Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA), also referred to as "male pattern baldness" (MPB). Male Pattern Baldness commonly known as Androgenetic Alopecia is one of the most common hair loss problems suffered by many men today.

Androgenetic hair loss is caused by three factors... age, genes, and inherited. This form of hair loss cannot occur without the presence of specific inherited genes. These genes can be passed on by either parent, each one of us will inherit one copy of a particular gene from our parents. What this means is you will inherit one copy of the gene that will determine whether you have inherited hair loss from your father and one copy from your mother. What does this mean?

Take for example that your father has one copy bad version of the gene and your mother does not. This means that the chances of you experiencing hair loss is 50/50 Another example that must be acknowledged is that if both parents have the hair loss problem and both of your parents each have one copy of the hair loss gene. The chance that you inherit the bad version from either your father or mother by statistics increases to 75%, note: you merely need just one copy to get the inherited hair loss problem. The factors in this scenario continue, if just one of your parents possess both copies of the bad version of the gene, the chances of you inheriting hair loss escalates to 100% So how do we determine the possibilities whether your parents have one copy each of the bad version of the gene. Through detailed genetic analysis, and taking into account previous generations, will uncover your answers.

Treating Hair Loss Naturally
Experts say vitamins, herbs; even diet can help men cope with hair loss.

Types of Female Hair Loss
Hair loss for females can be a very depressing, yet a common problem for many women. Although hair loss itself is not lethal, it is important to isolate the problem and remedy the solution.

Female hair loss/baldness is commonly diagnosed in the following conditions:

  • Telogen Effluvium
  • Androgenetic Alopecia
  • Alopecia Areata
  • Traction Alopecia

Telogen Effluvium
Telogen Effluvium is characterized by massive shedding of hair. This form of hair loss is not isolated to any particular area of the scalp; rather, it results in diffuse shedding that usually begins a few months after massive shock or stress to the body. This condition commonly occurs as a result of chemicals, radiation treatments and/or Chemotherapy.

The most noticeable aspect of Telogen Effluvium is that it does not always begin during the stress period, but after. However, this condition is reversible. Please note: to prevent skin sensitivities, please wait a minimum of eight weeks before using any Bio Follicle treatments.

Some of the key causes of Telogen Effluvium are a direct result of crash dieting, which can trigger nutritional deficiencies, hormonal changes (e.g. post-partum, menopause and post pregnancy), underlying illnesses that are viral or bacterial in nature, diabetes, thyroid diseases, chemotherapy and other pharmaceutical medications can all have a damaging effect on the scalp and hair loss.

Androgenetic Alopecia
Androgenetic Alopecia is a progressive form of hair loss that is an extremely common disorder affecting women. This condition is sometimes regarded as the "female form" of the male pattern baldness. This form of female baldness causes diffuse thinning at the top of the head while the crown and hairline remain in intact. A variety of factors associated with Androgenetic Alopecia are hormonally related (e.g. ovarian cysts, ingestion of high androgen index birth control pills, increased testosterone, menopause and pregnancy).

Alopecia Areata
Alopecia Areata is a patchy form of female baldness caused by an auto-immune disorder. In this case, the immune system remains overactive and it begins to attack the follicles for unknown reasons. This condition usually manifests itself in small- sized bald spots that grow to be larger quarter sized sections of missing hair if left untreated.

Traction Alopecia
Traction alopecia is a common cause of hair loss due to excessive pulling exerted on the scalp and hair as a result of various types of hairstyling (e.g. corn rows, weaves, braids, buns, ponytails, etc.). This excessive tension leads to breakage in the outermost hairs. This condition is seen in children and adults, but it most commonly affects African American women. When this type of stress is exerted on the scalp for extensive periods of time, left untreated will result in permanent hair loss.
