What are Pre & Probiotics?

Probiotics are living bacteria found in a variety of foods, including yogurt or yogurt drinks. Probiotics work by building up the 'good' bacteria in your gut. When you eat a probiotic food or supplement, millions of live bacterial travel through your digestive system to the colon where they are needed. However before they can reach the colon, they need to pass through the acid environment of your stomach where, sometimes, they can be digested and destroyed.

From current medical research, it is not clear how many bacteria manage to make it or in some cases whether the bacteria that are swallowed are the ones the body actually needs. BioVi creates a homoeostasis environment allowing you body to produce the needed bacteria.

Are all probitoics the same?

No they are not. Most probiotics are bacterial based, which do not survive the harsh environment (gastric shock) in the stomach and intestinal tract. BioVi, is a lactic yeast, where the natural cell coating (Chitin) allows it to survive the harsh environment (gastric shock) allowing it to reach the small intestine where it has the most benefit.

Are all yeasts the same?

No. There are good yeast and bad yeast. BioVi is a good yeast, it contains propriatry lactic yeast and antioxidants (polyphenols and anthocyanins) from the Aronia berry. Inadequate micro flora production causes the body to suffer from poor ingestion of key nutrients. Nutrient deficiency can lead to chronic inflammatory conditions and other ailments. BioVi lowers pH levels in the intestine, which promotes the growth of naturally beneficial intestinal bacterial flora.

So if BioVi is not a bacteria how does it work?

BioVi is a lactic yeast which creates a homeostasis (relatively stable equilibrium between interdependent elements) that allows the good bacteria to flourish. The yeast lowers and stabilizes the pH level of the intestinal tract (around 7 to 7.2), which it creates an adverse environment for the bad bacteria.

An important characteristic of a probiotic is the capacity to modulate the immune response of the host. In fact, a finely tuned balance between immune responses and tolerance to the gut micro biota is required for preventing intestinal inflammation. An effective modulation of the balance of pro and anti-inflammatory cytokine production strengthens the immunological barrier by stimulating the development and maintaining the state of alert of the innate and adaptive immune system and decreases the immune responsiveness to unbalanced inflammatory conditions.

BioVi contains a proprietary strain of yeast and antioxidants (polyphenols and anthocyanins) from the Aronia berry, the highest ranked in antioxidants of any fruit tested to date according to the USDA.

What is the Aronia berry?

The USDA reports show Aronia (Aronia melanocarpa) contains the highest levels of natural antioxidants of any fruit grown in the U.S. This bountiful shrub was known to Native Americans for healing qualities. Yet, Europeans settling in the New World found the astringent taste of aronia to be less than desirable so the berry was coined the "choke berry" and they attempted to eradicate it. Fortunately the health benefits were not over-looked by all, and extensive planting occurred in Europe and Asia with the resultant product used primarily in juice form. As a result of recent research into the nutritional and health value of the berries, the aronia plant has regained interest in North America and production sites are expanding rapidly.

A host of health issues may be eased with the Aronia berry including high-blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes. A rich source of antioxidants, this fruit also provides strong protection against aging and neurodegeneration.

Although not yet a household name in North America, the Aronia berry is gaining awareness. The high antioxidant ORAC score of the aronia berry makes it a strong ally in the fight against metabolic disease, cancer, heart disease, stroke and Alzheimer`s dementia.

Why do I need antioxidants?

Oxidation reactions can produce free radicals. In turn, these free radicals can start chain reactions. When the chain reaction occurs in a cell, it can cause damage or death to the cell. Antioxidants terminate these chain reactions by removing free radical intermediates, and inhibit other oxidation reactions, such as irregular cell growth.

What are free radicals?

Free radicals and other reactive oxygen species are derived either from normal essential metabolic processes in the human body or from external sources such as exposure to X-rays, ozone, cigarette smoking, air pollutants and industrial chemicals.

Free radicals roam the body, wreaking havoc. The free radical, in an effort to achieve stability, attacks nearby molecules to obtain another electron and, in doing so, damages those molecules. This situation can be compared to letting a bachelor into a dance where people have come as couples. The bachelor begins cutting in, each time leaving another bachelor, so the breaking up of couples spreads through the dance floor.

If free radicals are not inactivated, their chemical reactivity can damage all cellular macromolecules including proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and nucleic acids. Their destructive effects on proteins may play a role in the causation of cataracts. Free radical damage to DNA is also implicated in the causation of cancer and its effect on LDL cholesterol is very likely responsible for heart disease. In fact, the theory associating free radicals with the aging process has also gained widespread acceptance.
