DMAE (2-dimethylaminoethanol) is a chemical that is naturally produced in the human brain. Like choline, DMAE may increase levels of the brain neurotransmitter acetylcholine. DMAE has been hypothesized to be used by the body as a factor in converting the precursor choline into the neurotransmitter, acetylcholine. Acetylcholine plays a crucial role in higher cognitive functions such as learning and memory. It is because of this role of DMAE that it has been the basis for the reasoning behind the theory that supplementing with DMAE will enhance brain activity.
